Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the appointment of Carl McCall as chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees on Monday.

“Carl McCall will bring decades of experience in public service to the helm of the SUNY Board of Trustees,” Governor Cuomo said in a press release. “I look forward to working with Carl and the SUNY trustees to maintain the access and affordability of our public universities.”

McCall has served on the SUNY Board of Trustees since 2007, and was the New York State Comptroller from 1993 to 2002. He also was a three-term New York State Senator, commissioner of the New York State division of Human Rights, and president of the New York City Board of Education.

McCall attended Dartmouth College, Andover Newton Theological Seminary, and the University of Edinburgh.

The SUNY Board of Trustees governs the university and has 18 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the governor with Senate consent. The board’s tasks include regulating the SUNY’s tuition, and granting degrees and diplomas. It meets almost every month in a public meeting. SUNY has more than 467,000 students in more than 7,500 programs on 64 campuses, making it the largest comprehensive college-level school system in the nation.
