“A lot of water but little damage,” the Herald Sun calls it.
The cyclone passed over the northeastern state Queensland on Saturday. The heavy rains have put 18 rivers on flood watch and minor floods throughout the state put rescue workers to work.
“Twenty people have been rescued by swiftwater crews in the past two days, and 50 in the past week, and there have been five deaths in the past month,” Queensland Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said to the Australian.
At Warwick and Chincilla in Queensland, floods have reached levels of 30 feet, the Australian reported.
More rain is expected, the paper reports, as a low-pressure system is building that could turn into another cyclone.
All this water is expected to cause floods throughout the next month.
“What’s happening in Queensland now will be flowing down into NSW right up till the end of January,” said Fiona Johnson of the New South Wales weather bureau to the Australian.
In the meantime, in Western Australia temperatures reached 104 F and an all-state fire ban has been issued to prevent the strong winds and high temperature from creating huge bushfires.
