The New York Daily News reported that a man who had attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the ninth story of a building on West 45th Street on Sunday afternoon was saved by a large pile of garbage. The man, identified as Vangelis Kapatos, 26, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and is in critical but stable condition.

An official told the Daily News that “he landed on a garbage pile” and “that’s the only reason he’s alive.” The large pile of garbage bags had been put on the curb by the building’s employees on Sunday morning. Trash collection has been suspended since last week’s snowstorm, so that the Sanitation Department could focus on snow removal.
