A member of the Sudanese government on Thursday, defended the country’s decision to deny visas to U.N. aid workers attempting to enter the country. The workers wanted to enter before next month’s referendum on whether to split Sudan into separate northern and southern countries.

Rabie Abdelati Obeid, of Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP), told Voice of America, “We are the people to decide to say, ‘Yes,’ when we want to say according to our benefit and to say, ‘No,’ if we think that something will harm us or even as a precaution, we can say, ‘No.’”

Obeid said that in the past, aid organizations that entered Sudan turned out to be spies looking to collect information about the government, according to VOA.

The U.N. has been putting pressure on the largest African country to accept aid to ease any possible violence or trouble concerning the referendum.
