Professor Stephen Hawking, known for his work as a physicist and author, was honored by large group of scientists, intellectuals, and artists Thursday. The group orchestrated a gala in New York honoring his professional achievements.

Not only did the actors, poets, scientists, and scholars attending the gala at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall pay tribute to Hawking’s work as a physicist, they also celebrated his life. Hawking passed the date given by doctors for his expected death from neuro-muscular dystrophy. There were a multitude of performances at the event both musical and theatrical along with some speeches commending Hawking for his genius. The event also kicked off the beginning of the five-day World Science Festival, reported USA Today.

“As scientists, we step on the shoulders of science, building on the work that has come before us — aiming to inspire a new generation of young scientists to continue once we are gone,” said Hawking at the event.

Doctors predicted that Hawking would die more than 40 years ago due to his life changing illness. He has lived well despite his disability with the aid of an electronic wheelchair and an electronic speaking device. He is almost entirely paralyzed.

The next event at New York’s World Science Festival is by invitation only and those who wish to attend must visit the website before obtaining a ticket. For more information about the event, visit www.WorldScienceFestival.com.

Hawking recently took part in a television special for the Discovery Channel. He discussed some of his theories regarding deep space and the possible existence of aliens.

“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” said Hawking while promoting the show.

Hawking is known for his work within the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity. He has made many contributions to the world of science regarding the understanding of black holes. Last year he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
