Currently each state sets its own educational standards—but that is changing.

This week, 49 states and territories, including Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, joined the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which aims to develop uniform standards for English and math nationwide for kindergarten through high school.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, formerly the Chicago school chief, has advocated national education standards and may favor funding the project.
