The path has officially been cleared for Cathleen Black to become chancellor of New York City public schools. State Education Commissioner David Steiner granted the waiver on Monday.

As expected, Black has been allowed to become chancellor despite having no background in the field of education based on an agreement that requires her to operate with a “chief academic officer” who does have a background in education.

Black does have impeccable business credentials, particularly in the field of publishing.

“Despite her lack of direct experience in education, I find that Ms. Black’s exceptional record of successfully leading complex organizations and achievement of excellence in her endeavors warrant certification,” wrote Steiner in his 12-page decision, according to the New York Times.

The appointed chief academic officer is Shael Polakow-Suransky, who once served as a math teacher, and who is currently the city’s deputy chancellor for Accountability and Performance.
