Stanford Teams With City College in New Campus Bid

NEW YORK—Several acres of land on Roosevelt Island are becoming much-contested territory as the nation’s top schools compete for a bid to build an applied science campus there.

Cornell University has long been considered the favorite, but Stanford recently created a formidable partnership with the City College of New York (CCNY), to grab the limelight. The Stanford@CCNY partnership, announced Tuesday, will enable students and faculty from both universities to cooperate on undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels.

“CCNY also has an excellent track record for bringing underrepresented minorities into engineering, which is a clear national priority,” Stanford President John L. Hennessy said in a statement.

In April, Mayor Michael Bloomberg opened the bidding process by offering public land and economic incentives to bring a top-notch applied science school to the city.
Proposals can be submitted until Oct. 28, and selection of the winner is expected by the end of the year.
The New York City Development Corporation estimates that the project will create 22,000 permanent jobs over the next 35 years and generate $6 billion in economic activity.
