When it comes to selling your home, a kitchen can make or break a sale. Today’s modern kitchens are more than just a food preparation area. They are often the centre of the home where meals are prepared and shared, homework is done, guests are entertained and more. A bright, beautiful kitchen will add equity to the value of your property and help your home sell faster.

We asked members of the Real Estate Staging Association to share some tips to help you stage your kitchen.

Upgrade and Repair

Take an honest look at your kitchen. If there’s something that has been driving you crazy, now is the time to fix it. For example, the fridge door swings the wrong way, the kitchen could use an island prep counter, or the door pulls are antiquated. — Lisa Reis, DecoREISta

Small Updates That Work

Small changes, like freshly painted walls in a neutral colour, new hardware, and updated light fixtures or appliances will help sell your home faster. — Jill Gargus, Simply Irresistible Interiors

Clean and Uncluttered

Whether your kitchen is new or old, it is imperative that it is shown in its best light. Omit clutter in a kitchen by removing unnecessary items like fridge magnets, old sink rugs, and small appliances. Don’t forget to organize inside the fridge, cupboards, and pantry—potential buyers will check! Finally, clean all surfaces including the stove-top, counter tops, floor, walls, and cabinet doors. — Nella Deluca, Nella Casa Bella

Avoid Vacant Spaces

Even a newly renovated space will sell better if it is staged versus being left vacant. Empty spaces appear smaller and make it more difficult for people to have that important emotional connection that helps sells a property. — Ginny Truyens, Feels Like Home 2 Me

Choose a Complementary Colour Palette

The style and design of a kitchen can be pivotal to the quick sale of your home. When staging a kitchen, ensure your colour palette complements your cabinetry, flooring, and lighting. — Wendy Tomm, Beyond The Walls

Make it Spacious and Inviting

To create a spacious, inviting kitchen that shows well, remove all items/small appliances from counter tops. Adding fresh baked goods such as cookies or cupcakes is always a nice touch and provides a pleasant aroma! — Tina Marie Singh, Lionsgate Design
