Sprint Nextel Corp. on Monday officially denounced last week’s merger agreement between AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA, a division of Deutsche Telekom AG, citing antitrust concerns as the deal would make Sprint a far smaller No. 3 player in the wireless market.

Sprint urges the United States government to block this anti-competitive acquisition,” said Vonya McCann, senior vice president at Sprint in a statement. “This transaction will harm consumers and harm competition.… On behalf of our customers, our industry, and our country, Sprint will fight this attempt by AT&T.”

Analysts expect the U.S. Department of Justice, which oversees antitrust, to take up to a year to review the merger proposal. If approved, a combination of AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile would create the nation’s biggest carrier, surpassing current No. 1 Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and U.K.’s Vodafone Plc.
