Wireless telecom provider Sprint Nextel reported on Wednesday that the company gained subscribers in the second quarter, the first gain in almost three years. Sprint increased its subscriber base by 111,000 customers last quarter as it fought to retain customers who in the past left for larger competitors AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless.

The company attributed partly the gain to its new 4G network in the United States, the first wireless company to roll out such a network in the country, and its new HTC Evo Android-based smartphone. Sprint reported a quarterly financial loss of $760 million, or 25 cents per share.
