Temperatures are likely to be above average for this time of the year across much of the country. However, short term cold snaps and frosty periods, typical of winter, will still occur, says NIWA.
A La Nina weather pattern is likely to cause wetter conditions but could also bring warmer than average temperatures.
NIWA’s principal climate scientist Dr James Renwick told NZPA: "We have no outlook for Summer as yet, but the Spring outlook may well be a good starting point for Summer as well."
The Northland, Auckland, and Waikato, and Bay of Plenty regions are predicted to have above average temperatures. Rainfall, soil moisture levels, and stream flows are likely to be normal or below normal, says NIWA.
Other averages across the whole of New Zealand are predicted to be similar, with normal or above normal conditions.
