An established English legend is about to collide with a Norwegian newcomer and his meteoric rise in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal.

Harry Kane will lead England against Erling Haaland and Norway in Miami on July 11, bringing a battle for not just the World Cup but also the Golden Boot award to a head.

Kane has scored six goals to get England to this point in the tournament. Starting with two goals in the 4–2 opening win against Croatia, the forward secured the game-winning goals against Panama, Congo, and Mexico.

After three group stage matches and two elimination bouts this year, Kane now has 14 goals across his three World Cup appearances. This year, he has already matched the number he needed to secure his one and only Golden Boot award, which he earned in his World Cup debut in 2018.

Now, Haaland looks to post the same result in his first-ever World Cup appearance. The Norwegian striker has seven goals so far, currently tied with former Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé and only one goal behind race leader Lionel Messi.

Norway’s only blemish in the tournament so far was a group stage loss to Mbappé and Team France, but Haaland sat out that game because his team had already secured its place in the round of 32.

Haaland’s seven goals came in four games; that pace makes him the greatest World Cup debut scorer since Poland’s Grzegorz Lato scored seven goals in 1974.

Haaland netted his last two goals in Norway’s 2–1 upset against Brazil in the round of 16, the 14th consecutive match in which he scored a goal. He also became the first European player in nearly 30 years to score a goal in his first four World Cup matches, and he is only the eighth ever to do it.

With Haaland leading the way, Norway advanced beyond the round of 16 for the first time in its history. But he and Kane could have actually played on the same team instead.

Haaland was born in Leeds, England. He holds dual citizenship and currently lives there, playing for Manchester City. He could have donned England’s jersey, but he was ultimately raised in Bryne, Norway, and considers himself Norwegian.

“I’m proud to be a Norwegian,” Haaland said in an interview with ESPN ahead of the World Cup. “There’s a lot of history in Norway as a country.”

Haaland and Kane will take the pitch at 5 p.m. ET on July 11 in Miami. Only one World Cup star will get to continue his push for glory.

The Golden Boot is awarded to the top goal scorer of the tournament regardless of how close he gets to the championship. So if either player ends up on the losing side but has at least nine goals total—one more than Messi has at the moment—he still has a slim chance to take home that trophy.
