BEREA, Ohio—J.J. McCarthy’s rookie year with the Minnesota Vikings is already over.

The former star quarterback at the University of Michigan and first-round NFL draft pick will miss the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, which he injured in his preseason debut last week.
