Julian Carranza’s second-half hat trick carried the Philadelphia Union to a 3–2 win over Saprissa on Tuesday at San Jose, Costa Rica, in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions Cup first-round series.

The finale of the two-leg, total-goal series is scheduled for Feb. 27 in Chester, Pa. The sides are vying for the right to oppose Mexico’s Pachuca in the round of 16.
