Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan led one of the most splashy offseason efforts this year, and his organization rewarded him with a three-year contract extension.

Khan’s moves included the signing of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and trades for star wide receiver DK Metcalf and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. In addition, the Steelers added tight end Jonnu Smith, cornerback Darius Slay, linebacker Malik Harrison, and running back Kenneth Gainwell this offseason. Notable draft picks included defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, running back Kaleb Johnson, and Ohio State edge Jack Sawyer in the first three rounds.

“Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency. We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said in a statement on Thursday.

Khan has been on a mission to build the Steelers roster amid quality mediocrity in recent years. The Steelers have been no better than 10–7 in the past four seasons, and the quarterback position has been a carousel.

While Rodgers won’t be the long-term solution either, the Steelers loaded up on talent around him this year to make a serious run at the Super Bowl. The six-time Super Bowl champions haven’t reached the Super Bowl since 2011, and Pittsburgh last advanced past the Wild Card round in the 2017 season.

Khan has been the general manager since 2022, when he took over from Kevin Colbert. The Steelers hired within as Khan had been with the organization since 2001, and he served in the front office during two Super Bowl championship seasons with the franchise during the 2000s.

“I would like to thank Art Rooney II for his support,” Khan said in a statement. “I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans.”

A New Orleans native, Khan graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School followed by Tulane University with a sports management degree and business administration minor. Khan then served as an intern with the New Orleans Saints in the scouting department during college, and he joined the football operations staff in 1997 where he worked until 2001.

“You know, I was working for the Saints, and to be honest with you I was born and raised in New Orleans, and I never thought I'd be leaving New Orleans,” Khan told reporters in 2022 when he became the Steelers’ general manager.

“Then one day I got a call from the Steelers about a position and obviously the opportunity to work for the Rooneys, I wasn’t going to pass it up. I came up here, interviewed, and I just felt at home from the very beginning, and fortunately they hired me.”

Khan started off as the Steelers’ football administration coordinator in 2001, and he worked in the role until 2011 when he became the director of football administration until 2016. He then became the vice president of football and business administration in 2016 until 2021 before his present role as general manager.

“I love it here. My wife is from western PA, my kids were born here. I’ve been here for 22 years,” Khan added. “This is where I want to be. I’m a Western PA person now.”

Khan benefitted the Steelers from working with Colbert for over two decades. Colbert served as the general manager from 2010 to 2022, and he previously served in football operations with the Steelers from 2000 to 2010.

“I’ve learned so much from him. Great lessons,” Khan told reporter Missi Matthews via Steelers.com in 2022.
