The youth gold medalist was diagnosed with an ‘incurable’ cancer earlier this year, and suffered a miscarriage through her health battle.
British professional boxer Georgia O’Connor has died at 25 years old, months after being diagnosed with incurable cancer.
O’Connor’s promotion company Boxxer confirmed news of her death in a May 22
statement on social media platform X, and commemorated her impact on the boxing community.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O’Connor,” read the post. “A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon.
“Georgia was loved, respected and admired by her friends here at BOXXER. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time.”
Ben Shalom, founder and CEO of Boxxer, also posted a
statement on X, extending his condolences to O’Connor’s loved ones and remembering the “inspirational person” she was.
“It’s hard to make sense of this… a lot goes on in life but nothing else matters other than your family and your health,” he wrote.
“My heart goes out to Georgia’s parents and partner, who I know did everything they could tirelessly and are going through so much right now.”
O’Connor revealed her cancer diagnosis in January, after suffering from debilitating pain, but did not disclose what type of cancer she had.
“For 17 weeks since the start of October, I’ve been in constant pain,” she wrote at the time, adding that she “said from the start I felt it was cancer.”
O’Connor had had ulcerative colitis,
an inflammatory bowel disease, along with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease. She said these two conditions “dramatically increase the chances of getting” cancer. “Not one doctor did the scans or blood tests I begged for whilst crying on the floor in agony. Instead, they dismissed me,” she added.
“They gaslit me, told me it was nothing, made me feel like I was overreacting. They refused to scan me. They refused to investigate. They REFUSED to listen.”
In February, O’Connor
updated her social media followers on her health status, disclosing she suffered from a miscarriage with longtime boyfriend Adriano Cardinali, whom she married earlier this month.
“The last few months have been a rollercoaster,” she wrote. “I’ve been pregnant with a beautiful baby, suffered a miscarriage, then got diagnosed with ‘incurable’ cancer. But I still feel on top of the world!”
O’Connor embarked on her professional boxing career in 2021, and held an undefeated record.
As an amateur, she won a gold medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, a silver medal that same year at the Youth World Championships, and a bronze at the Youth World Championships in 2018.
