The Kansas City Chiefs signed Harrison Butker to a contract worth $25.6 million, making him the highest paid kicker in the NFL.
Harrison Butker has made some critical kicks for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs over his career.
Now, he is being paid handsomely for that performance.
The Chiefs signed Butker to a
four-year, $25.6 million contract, which, the player confirmed on social media, makes him the highest paid kicker in the NFL. The deal also includes $17.8 million in guaranteed money, and Butker will make an average of $6.4 million per year through the 2028 season.
“There’s no place I’d rather be than with the Chiefs, excited to finalize a 4-year extension. To the Heights!” Butker
wrote on X to his 197,700 followers.
The deal surpasses the previously highest paid kickers
, Justin Tucker (Baltimore Ravens) and Jake Elliott (Philadelphia Eagles), each of whom averages $6 million per season.
Butker was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh-round pick (233rd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was signed by Kansas City off the Panthers’ practice squad on Sept. 26, 2017. He has since made some of the biggest kicks in the history of the Chiefs and played a pivotal role in the franchise’s last three Super Bowl titles.
Butker has
converted 89.1 percent of his field goals (197 for 221) and made 70 percent (28 for 40) from beyond 50 yards over seven seasons for Kansas City.
He has been especially dominant in high-pressure situations and made 32 of 36 field
goals (88.9 percent) and 62 of 65 extra points (95.4 percent) in the postseason. He scored a game-winning field goal in a 38-35 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Butker also converted a game-winning kick in the Chief’s 23–20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2023 AFC Championship game
In addition, Butker set the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, 57 yards, against the San Francisco 49ers this past season. He has the most field goals in Super Bowl history, nine.
Butker has 900
career points, the third-most all-time points in the Chiefs’ franchise history. He is only the third player in franchise history with 900 or more career points. His 221 field goal attempts and 197 makes are the third-most by any Chiefs kicker.
He has passed the 100-point milestone for five consecutive seasons from 2017 through 2021, tied for the second-most in franchise history with kicker Jan Stenerud (1967–71).
Butker surpassed Nick Lowery for first in franchise history for most field goals made of 50 or more yards with 28. He is tied with Chris Boswell for the fifth-most 50 or more-yard field goals in NFL history.
However, Butker faced
controversy this offseason when he delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school in Kansas. Butker criticized President Joe Biden’s abortion stance and the stigma behind women being stay-at-home moms.
The NFL
distanced itself from Butker’s speech but stopped short of condemning it.
