Jags Coaches Say Cam Little’s 70-Yard Field Goal Changes Their Midfield Calculus

The Jacksonville Jaguars are excited about the possibilities ahead after kicker Cam Little’s 70-yard field goal.

The Jags trotted out Little to make the kick in the final second of the first half of the Aug. 9 preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Had it been done during the regular season, the kick would have shattered the NFL record for longest field goal, and it had enough height to be good from even farther. Little’s teammates highlighted how special the moment was, while acknowledging that having a kicker with his talent is a weapon in key situations.

“That was a special moment,” special teams coach Heath Farwell said after practice Monday. “I think the group, not only the specialists, realized how cool that was, but you saw the team just get behind Cam, and they realized how talented he is and the type of person he is. They love him to death, and he could just see the excitement, not only for the team but for him in our group.”

Farwell acknowledged that it was a preseason kick but said it builds confidence in the kicking unit when the regular season comes around. Farwell also shot down a reporter’s question of whether Little was helped by new NFL rules allowing kicking balls to be broken in before game day.

“He’s been making 70s in practice and last season,” he said. “That’s not why.”

Head coach Liam Coen said Little’s kick changes the calculus about when the Jags take a chance on a long field goal.

“I think [quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence] kind of summed it up well, where it’s like, I don’t know if we’re going to be going for 70-yarders in the first and second quarter of the game, but maybe the kick line to gain is maybe a little bit moved back for us in some ways,” Coen said. “But it was such a cool moment ... and to have the ability to do it, whether it’s end of half, end of game, critical moments [where] we need points, you feel like you’ve got a weapon to go and give yourselves a chance.”

Coen said he wants to be aggressive in certain situations on fourth down when the analytics favor it, particularly when the offense is on the plus side of the 50-yard line. But having a kicker with established range like Little’s, and a punter in Logan Cooke—a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2024—who can pin teams deep in their own territory opens up a number of possibilities in the middle of the field.

“We'll have to make some decisions when the time comes.”

Defensive end Travon Walker heaped praise on Little during his press conference.

“That was something special to see, man,” he said. “It’s really once in a lifetime. You really don’t get to see that much. Hats off to Cam. He’s a great kicker. He’s doing a great job.”

Walker noted that he doesn’t often see Little unless they are in the special teams period during practice, but the whole team is aware of his ability.

“We know he can kick 50 yards easy,” he said.

Cooke, who serves as Little’s holder on field goals, said the kick was par for the course for Little.

“You see him do it all the time,” Cooke said, via the team’s official website. “He hit a 72[-yarder] out here [in a recent practice] in a two-minute drill. You know he has the leg, so when he hits it straight, you’re like, ‘All right. It has to be good.’'’
Wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter confirmed that Little hits similar kicks regularly.

“I [saw] him do it in warmups, actually, earlier today,” Hunter said after Saturday’s game. “And I see him do it in practice a lot. So I was super excited to see him do it in the game.”

Though it does not officially count in the record books because it was a preseason game, Little’s kick was four yards deeper than the current NFL record, 66 yards, set by Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. However, it is the longest field goal in preseason history, beating the 66-yarder made by Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2024 preseason. It is also the longest field goal on record in the history of the sport at any level; the previous record was 69 yards, set by Ove Johansson of Abilene Christian University in 1976.
