Baylor University redshirt freshman and defensive lineman, Alex Foster, has died at 18 years old.

Foster died unexpectedly Wednesday morning in his hometown, Greenville, Mississippi. The official cause or circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

In a joint statement, Baylor’s head coach, Dave Aranda and athletic director, Mack Rhoades confirmed news of his passing, sending prayers and condolences to the Foster family.

“We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved member of our football family,” read the post on social media platform X. “Our deepest condolences are with Alex’s family and all who loved him, as we lift them up in prayer now and in the days to come.

“In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith, the love of the Baylor community, and the unbreakable bond forged through the game we love. Alex’s memory will forever be part of our hearts and this program.”

Foster graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 2023 and was the highest-rated high school signee for the Bears’ 2024 recruiting class.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a young life in our community,” his former high school said in a statement. “We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Alex Foster, a graduate of our school.
During this time of sorrow, we stand together in faith, compassion, and prayer. May God comfort all who are grieving.”

Foster, who was listed at 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds, received offers from multiple universities including Arkansas, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky, before signing with Baylor in February of last year.

He was a four-star recruit and the No. 13 overall recruit in the state of Mississippi.

In his first academic year, Foster sat out during gameplay, but actively participated in spring training practices and was expected to play a key role on the Bears’ defensive line rotation this season.

Aranda said Foster is a “beloved member of our Baylor Family.”
“We are devastated by this loss,” he wrote in a separate post on X. “In his time at Baylor he made a long-lasting impact on all of us in the program. Our hearts are broken.”
