Longtime wide receiver Adam Thielen showed his exuberance on Aug. 27 when his former team, the Minnesota Vikings, traded for him.

“We’re going home!” Thielen told his family in a social media post.
The video also showed the excitement of his 4-year-old daughter, Cora. Thielen’s wife, Caitlin, also posted a video informing their daughter of the news in addition to a separate Instagram story regarding the wait as the teams negotiated.

“Praise the Lord. What a roller coaster this past week has been. Adam you are so strong and I know how much this means to you,” she wrote on Instagram.

Adam Thielen, 35, grew up in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and played at Division II Minnesota State-Mankato before he landed with the Vikings in 2013 as an undrafted free agent. He produced a successful career there before the Vikings parted ways with him over salary cap issues in 2023, and Thielen spent the past two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Minnesota desperately needed another receiver due to Jordan Addison’s three-game suspension and lingering injuries to Justin Jefferson (hamstring), Jalen Nailor (hand), and Tai Felton (arm) — all of whom are listed as questionable. Rondale Moore is out for the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

In the trade, the Vikings sent a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick to the Panthers, who also sent the Vikings a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Thielen led the Panthers in receiving the past two seasons with 103 receptions for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns in 2023 and 48 catches for 615 yards and five touchdowns in 2024. In his time with the Vikings, he amassed 534 receptions for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns with two Pro Bowl appearances.

Thielen’s touchdown reception total ranks third in Vikings history, behind Cris Carter’s 110 and Randy Moss’s 92. This season, Thielen could pass Moss for second all-time in receptions during the 2025 season. Moss had 587 receptions as a Viking, and Thielen had 534 from his first stint.

With Thielen teamed up with Addison and Jefferson, the Vikings could have a receiver trio that rivals the days of Carter, Moss, and Jake Reed in 1998. That trio lit up the NFL for  2,798 yards and 32 touchdowns.

It will only help second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who didn’t play a snap last season due to a meniscus injury. McCarthy has an already-talented offense that helped the Vikings go 14–3 last season.

Thielen has some familiarity with the current Vikings. He and McCarthy worked out together during the offseason, and Thielen played under Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell in 2022.

Trading for Thielen is the latest of several moves by the Vikings. Minnesota traded away defensive back Mekhi Blackmon, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, and backup quarterback Sam Howell for future draft picks. The Vikings also notably signed backup quarterback Carson Wentz, a North Dakota native, after the Howell trade.

As for the Panthers, quarterback Bryce Young loses a favorite target as he enters year three. Carolina will look to Jalen Coker, Jimmy Horn Jr., Tetairoa McMillan, and Xavier Legette for added production.

The Panthers notably invested in McMillan with the No. 8 pick in this year’s draft. A former Arizona star, McMillan caught 84 passes for 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns last year for the Wildcats, and he had three straight seasons of at least 700 yards and eight touchdowns in the desert.

Thielen counts as $3.4 million in dead salary cap money for the Panthers this year and $3.3 million next year. With the Vikings, he will make $6.25 million this year, a far cry from his former contract with the team, where he was on the books for four years, $64.2 million before the 2023 release.

Thielen will begin what could be his final season when the Vikings kick off against the Chicago Bears in Week 1 on Sept. 8.
