Many Americans waited Tuesday morning for confirmation of the landing of NASA’s Discovery space shuttle. The shuttle’s mission focused on maintaining the NASA space station STS-131.
Discovery landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with Commander Alan G. Poindexter and Pilot James P. Dutton Jr. operating the space shuttle. The operation went smoothly, with no loss of life or severe equipment damage.
The shuttle landed at 9:08 a.m., allowing NASA officials to mark Discovery’s trip a success.
The crew on Discovery had arrived at the STS-131 space station to deliver more than seven tons of needed supplies. They had gone on multiple space walks after docking the space shuttle at the station for a 10-day visit.
The crew had also installed a 1,700 pound ammonia tank to be used at the space station, along with a payload of science racks for use at the station’s laboratories.
