As the World Cup is set to start in South Africa this summer, the head of South African Police has called on its police force to shape up. Bheki Cele says he wants a fit force, which is able to protect the fans. South African police have a reputation of being “trigger-happy,” and “fat,” African media report. To put his money were his mouth is, Cele demonstrated at a press conference the aerobic exercises he expects his officers to do. “Police officers should be able to walk with their heads held high, their stomach in, and chest out—not the other way around,” Cele said. If South African officers don’t fit into the same size uniform as when they started their career within a year, they will be expelled from the force according to the chief of police.
