After over 30 years since the first production of its iconic Walkman (Soundabout in the US and Stowaway in the UK), Sony has announced that it will retire the product.

The first low cost portable music player was initially released in 1979. Sony has sold over 200 million units of this product over its history, according to mashable.com

The final batch was shipped to Japanese retailers in April, IT Media reported. Once these units are sold, new cassette Walkmans will no longer be available through the manufacturer.

Ironically, the retirement of the product was announced one day before the ninth birthday of the Apple iPod, though it was more likely the rise of the CD player rather than the iPod that contributed to the downfall of the Walkman.
