Sotomayer Comic Coming
Sonia Sotomayor, nominated by President Obama in May 2009 became the third female, and the first Latina justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. This April her fans and supporters will be able to read her life story in a 32-page comic book biography created by artists of Bluewater Productions.

Why Choose Sotomayer?

“Sonia Sotomayor’s story illustrates everything that is right about the United States,” said Darren G. Davis, president of Bluewater Productions in a press release. From an early life of poverty, “she has risen to become one of the most powerful people in the country, all because she worked hard.”

Sotomayer was born in the United States. Her heritage is Puerto Rican. Her parents came to the U.S. from the island after World War II. Her mother was a nurse and her father a tool and die maker with a third grade education. He did not speak English and died when Sotomayer was nine.

Raised in the South Bronx, Sotomayer was diagnosed with diabetes at a young age. Her widowed mother emphasized education and sent Sotomayer and her younger brother Juan to a private Catholic school. Sotomayer graduated as the valedictorian of her class.

Sotomayer got her undergraduate at Princeton (where she went on scholarship) and proceeded to Yale Law School.

Sotomayer began her 30-year law career in 1979 at age 24, as the assistant district attorney in Manhattan. In 1984 she entered private practice as a corporate litigation lawyer. She became a trial judge in 1992, when President George W. Bush nominated her for United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She was the youngest member of the court. In 1998, she was appointed to the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit by President Bill Clinton.

Sotomayer’s story is the latest in Bluewater Productions’ biographical series about female empowerment, called “Female Force.” The series includes the stories of fiction writer J.K. Rowling, first lady Michelle Obama, journalist Barbara Walters, and politician and author Sarah Palin.

Bluewater Productions is an independent publishing and production company that creates comic books, graphic novels, and film and television productions.
