NEW YORK—FedEx Express began a project Wednesday to put a solar array on its three buildings at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The project is slated for completion in February 2013, according to NJBIZ. The project will create jobs for 120 people, and the array will cover 3.5 acres of rooftops with a system that will generate about 2.4 million kilowatt hours, about 15 percent of the energy FedEx Express uses at the airport.
“It’s about finding diverse sources of energy as we seek to operate more efficiently,” Mitch Jackson, the company’s vice president of environmental affairs, told The Star-Ledger. Jackson said the solar energy would be cheaper than the current energy, which is from the grid.
Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the airport, lauded the move. Bill Baroni, deputy executive director, told NJBIZ, “We look forward to other tenants following their (FedEx’s) lead.”
More than 33.7 million passengers flew in or out of Newark in 2011, according to the Port Authority.
