Software Update Failed messages and iOS 7 Error 9006 in iTunes are plaguing some users attempting to download Apple’s latest operating system on Wednesday.
Some have turned to iTunes to download the OS after running into the Over-the-Air Software Update Failed messages. And some users were reported that their downloads were taking longer than expected--as long as 30 hours.
UPDATE: The website EveryJoe.com, citing a “buddy who works for Apple,” posted a possible solution to the Software Update Failed error.
1) Restart the device
2) Disable Wi-Fi
3) Turn off the device; keep it off for around 5 minutes
4) Turn it back on and enable Wi-Fi
5) Attempt to download the iOS 7 update again.
Another website, Schiffner.com, has a slightly different method:
1) Do a hard reset via holding down power and home until the phone shuts off.
2) Turn on the phone; enter password
3) Open the Settings section and go to Wireless Settings
4) Press the arrow next to the wireless network the phone is on, scroll down, and hit forget network.
5) Go out and turn off the Wi-Fi
6) Close the Settings
7) Open Settings app, go to Wireless Settings, turn on Wi-Fi again
8) Connect to wireless network
9) Access Settings > General >Software Update
10) Click install on the available update.
On Twitter, a number of users said they were able to bypass the error via these steps.
For iTunes error 9006, Apple offers steps on its website to circumvent it. However, many users have said it doesn’t work. According to Gottabemobile.com, Apple says “to close iTunes and restart the check for updates process,” but notes it is not a guaranteed fix. Apple then says to turn off any-third party security software, including antivirus or firewall software. Apple says to uninstall software that can’t be turned off so easily.
Apple also suggests checking the default packet size, providing directions on its website to reset this. People can also log out of their router, making sure that ports 80 and ports 443 are allowed. If one hasn’t made changes to either the packet size or the ports, then they shouldn’t worry about this.
It also suggests deleting the partial iOS 7 download. For Windows 7 and Vista users, the file is likely located at “ C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingApple ComputeriTunes ” and for Windows XP, “C:Documents and Settings[username]Application DataApple ComputeriTunes .”
In Mac OS X, go to “ /Library/iTunes/ ” .
While in the folder, search for iPhone Software Updates, iPad Software Updates, or iPod Software updates, depending on the device.
Earlier in the day, Apple uploaded its iOS 7 update for iPhone 4 or later models, iPad 2s or greater, or fifth-generation iPod touch models. But due to the high demand for the software, many couldn’t download the update right away.
On Twitter, a number of people posted comments in relation to the Software Update Failed errors and iOS 7 Error 9006.
The Software Update Failed message error prevents users from downloading the update. The same holds true with the Error 9006.
For those attempting to download the update they can go to the General section and tapping Software Update in iOS Settings. Or one can plug in their device to a computer with iTunes and update it through there.
There are likely millions of other users attempting to download the update at the same time. Users commonly said it takes between a half-hour to 45 minutes to download it.
The full list of compatible devices with iOS 7 includes the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 variants, iPod Touch 16GB, iPod Touch 32GB/64GB, the iPad 2, the iPad with Retina Display, and the iPad Mini.
