Hong Kong authorities on July 6 published more details about the National Security Law imposed by Beijing last week. The new law strengthens Hong Kong police powers over the internet, including the ability to ask publishers to take down posts, restrict access to them, or block access to the platform that carries it. Failure to comply could result in a fine or jail.
In response, social media companies Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Telegram said they would not provide user data to the Hong Kong government.
