NEW YORK—The effects of a blizzard, the east coast’s third major snow storm of the season, has already dumped more 20 inches of snow to the streets of New York City, leaving many commuters with an impasse and closing all New York City schools one Friday.

The school-closing announcement, by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, came early Friday morning, giving New York City’s 1.1 million school children their second snow day this winter.

Unploughed roads early Friday morning made the commute difficult if not impossible for some, with power outages affecting many.

Over 200,000 New Yorker lost power, according to the Associated Press, with several other major power outages in the New England states.

The effects of the ongoing blizzard are expected to continue into the weekend with lighter snowfall, yet severely strong winds.

“Gusts into Saturday will still lead to extensive drifting in open areas, while renegade bursts of snow will continue to spin around the slowly diminishing storm, covering some roads and driveways again,” said a report put out by the AccuWeather on Friday.

An additional 6-12 inches of snowfall is forecasted into Saturday.

Three Tragic Deaths Result From Storm

A man in Central Park was killed late Thursday afternoon after a snow-laden branch fell on him, reported AP.

The man, Elmaz Qyra, from Brooklyn, was found at 3:30 p.m and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other storm-related deaths occurred in Deleware County, Pennsylvania, wrote the Delaware County Daily Times Pennsylvania, when two school girls were struck on Thursday by a train on Amtrak’s Acela train line.

While the all the details are not known, Vanessa Dorwart and Gina Gentile, both sophomores at Interboro High School, are thought to have been crossing the tracks when struck by the train.

A vigil for the Interboro High School Students is to be held Friday night.
