A new smartphone app may help people who need to document Hurricane Irene damage in order to file insurance claims.

North Dakota State University Extension Service and Myriad Devices developed Disaster Recovery Log for android phones, and it's free on the Android Market. Users can take pictures of damage, record audio comments, and enter text to explain and record any damage. Such information is essential for filing claims for insurance or for help from the government.

The app was funded by a grant from the USDA, and also offers expert advice from locally-based government about how to clean or restore water-damaged items from houses and furniture, to books, clothes, carpet, and landscapes.

More information can be found online on the North Dakota State University Website, and includes information in English, Spanish, Arabic, Serbo-Croatian and American Sign Language.
