The smartest cities were ranked in a recent study, with the upstate New York college town of Ithaca ranking first on the list.

Luminosity.com, which provides mental exercises and training, carried out a study, using data from more than 3 million people across the United States who used the website’s service, according to a press release.

“One of the most interesting findings from this analysis is that most of the top metro areas contain major research universities, suggesting that education is an important predictor of cognitive performance,” said Daniel Sternberg, Ph.D., a data scientist at Lumosity, in the release.

He added: “Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a ‘cognitive reserve’ that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance.”

The study evaluated people between the ages of 18 and 75 across five cognitive areas, including problem solving, attention, flexibility, processing speed, and memory.

It ranked cities which include an urban center of at least 10,000 residents.
