[xtypo_dropcap]N[/xtypo_dropcap]ew York City was the first city in the nation to officially support Small Business Saturday over Thanksgiving weekend. Small businesses are often left out between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with the former drawing crowds to the big box stores and the latter entertaining shoppers at home.

American Express headed an initiative, supported by the city, Facebook, and several organizations to give small businesses a boost during the busiest shopping weekend of the year. The company provided $100 in free Facebook advertising for the first 10,000 small businesses that signed up for the campaign. For every person who “liked” Small Business Saturday on Facebook, American Express donated $1 to up to $500,000 to Girls Inc., an organization that supports young female entrepreneurs. Facebook handed out $500,000 in Facebook advertising credits for small merchants.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds communities together, and we’ve always sought new ways to support them—something that became even more important when the national economic downturn began,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a press release.
