Flushing, NY—Nineteen-year-old American Sloane Stephens was ousted by Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the third round of the U.S. Open.
The talented but unseasoned Stephens, currently ranked 44th in the world, played a dismal third set that included six double-faults in four service games. If those four service games she was broken three times.
The third round loss to Ivanovic at Flushing was a repeat of last year’s script when Stephens was making her U.S. Open debut. Ivanovic won that match in straight sets before losing the next round.
“I definitely expected a tough match this time around,” said Ivanovic. “She’s improved a lot since last year. Her serve is a lot faster.”
The former number-one ranked Ivanovic will face Tsvetana Pironkova of Belgium in the fourth round.
