In one of the bloodiest days for U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan in recent months, six soldiers were killed Monday, NATO officials said.

Three U.S. soldiers died in fights in the southern part of the country, while two other service members were killed in another battle in the east. At least one of them was French, Reuters reported.

The sixth soldier was killed in a vehicle when a bomb detonated by the roadside. His nationality was not released.

The year 2009 was the deadliest one for the coalition military in Afghanistan, with 520 casualties, of which 317 were from U.S. The total number killed since 2001 is 1,582 soldiers, according to statistics on the iCasualties.org Web site.

On Sunday, British war correspondent Rupert Hamer and one U.S. Marine were killed when a roadside bomb hit the vehicle they were traveling in.

Seven CIA agents were killed by a suicide bomber on Dec. 30 who was reportedly an al-Qaeda double agent working for both the Jordanians and the CIA.

As the insurgency continues, President Obama recently ordered another 30,000 troops to be deployed to Afghanistan, increasing the total number of U.S. soldiers in the country to more than 100,000. The declared goal is to prevent the Taliban from overthrowing the Afghan government and also to train Afghan security forces.
