An offline version of SimCity, which will enable players to play the game without being connected to the Internet, is on its way.

“SimCity offline is coming,” Maxis General Manager Patrick Buechner said in a blog post last month. “I’ve wanted to say those words for quite some time.”

The offline version is coming as a free download with Update 10 to all SimCity players, he said.

“We are in the late phases of wrapping up its development and while we want to get it into your hands as soon as possible, our priority is to make sure that it’s as polished as possible before we release it. So, until then… testing, testing and more testing. As one of the final steps, we’re putting Offline into the hands of some of our most hardcore players, the DevTesters.”

Part of Update 10 will be the new Single Player Mode, which lets people play offline by themselves.

Games will still store data while people play offline, so if or when they do log back online, the progress will not be wiped out.

The game was released last March after a decade wait but overwhelmed the servers hosting the game, according to Electronics Arts.
