The Silver Fire that started south of Banning, Calif., near Highway 243 has burned at least 2,500 acres.

There were mandatory evacuations for Poppet Flats, Silent Valley, and Twin Pines, said the Riverside County Fire Department.

The department said the fire is “burning at a critical rate.”

It said an evacuation center has been set up at Hemet High School.

More than 450 firefighters were mobilized, 71 engine companies were deployed, 5 helicopters were sent, and there were 4 air tankers.
