HONOLULU—Shen Yun Performing Arts brought the gift of peace for Juanita Balmores, manager at Siemens, on her birthday at the Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu on May 4.

“It gave you peace—it’s very peaceful, the way they move, the music that went with it,” Ms. Balmores said. “It created a very peaceful feeling from it.”

Ms. Balmores was especially moved by the finale of the performance. “To me, it represents God,” Ms. Balmores said. “God is merciful and also He is very powerful—he can just turn the water when it’s rising up. He can perform miracles.”

The stories New York-based Shen Yun tells through music and dance seek to revive traditional Chinese culture, which is believed to be divinely inspired. From the art forms, like classical Chinese dance, to the costumes of phoenix fairies, to the narratives, a touch of the divine is present throughout the culture and performance.

Watching the finale, Ms. Balmores said that “you can tell there is God.”

Ms. Balmores said she could connect to the spirituality of the culture and “if a nation will turn to God, if people will turn to God, it will be a peaceful world.”

Ms. Balmores attended the performance with her sister and sister-in-law Mrs. Gloria Bangilinan, who saw the performance last year and brought them as a birthday treat.

“I loved the show,” Mrs. Bangilinan said.

Mrs. Bangilinan said she loved the costumes, and couldn’t pick a favorite, as they were “very, very elegant looking, very colorful.”

“I like the music also, the orchestra,“ Mrs. Bangilinan said. Shen Yun Orchestra’s unique instrumentation creates a completely new sound in blending east and west, which Ms. Balmores described as ”very soothing music. It relaxes.”

“I really like it,” Ms. Balmores said of her birthday present. “Very elegant and very precise. I really enjoy the art.”
