The shrimp season in New England ended about a month and a half early in 2011. The season, which was scheduled to end on April 15, had already brought in a full harvest by Feb. 28 when it ended.

According to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, 4,192 metric tons of shrimp have already been harvested, 192 metric tons over the recommended level. They added that if the season had been allowed to continue through April 15, as much as 7,000 tons could have been harvested.

Members of the commission’s northern unit have complained about an untimely reporting system for shrimp catches, which could lead to overharvesting, which could lead to a lower stock in the 2012 fisheries.
