A shooting at Liberty University in Virginia on early Tuesday morning left a male student dead at a women’s dorm.

The student was shot by a campus police officer after a “physical altercation,” police Lt. Dave Gearhart told the Lynchburg News Advance.

The officer was attacked by the student in the lobby of the dorm, LU Women’s Annex II, the university said in a statement, prompting the officer to shoot him.

The officer was taken to the Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment in unspecified condition.

The Lynchburg Police Department is investigating the matter and Liberty University is cooperating.

University President Jerry Falwell said in a statement that “The Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted.”

The entire campus is open as normal and classes are not impacted.

Gearhart said that the shooting was an isolated incident and “there is no ongo0ng concern for the safety of the students or the community.”
