Shogo Kubo, a legendary skateboarder with the Z-Boys, died on Tuesday in Hawaii, according to reports.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Kubo, 54, died after surfing.

His body was found unresponsive at around 8:30 a.m. in waters off the beach in Portlock.

EMS workers treated him on the scene. He was later pronounced dead about 45 minutes later.

TMZ and ESPN later confirmed it was Kubo, the skateboarder.

“All that I can say is that with reverence my heart is heavy in the loss of Shogo, a brother with a big heart,” Z-Boys member Peggy Oki told ESPN.

“Shogo had good style and to me that was the most important thing about a skateboarder,” said Glen E. Friedman, a documentary filmmaker. “He really grew into this incredible competitor and, as an adult, became a very caring and nice person who commanded a lot of respect from everyone.”
