Sherlock Series 4 isn’t scheduled to premiere until 2016--an almost unbelievable gap from series 3.
But fans of the show should be interested to hear that star Martin Freeman recently revealed that a “one-off special” could come before series 4.
“There is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought ‘we’ve just got to do this,'” Freeman said on Chatty Man, according to Cult Box.
“And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it.”
Sherlock is a very popular television show but episodes have been slow coming as Freeman and other star Benedict Cumberbatch are sought after actors.
Freeman recently told the Guardian that there’s no news on series 4--except that filming was supposed to start soon.
“I thought the plan was to do it in the autumn but apparently that’s fallen away,” he said. “We’re all busy. But I’m ready. I’m there. It depends if you want to make time for it. I hope we do. I love it.”
Writer Steven Moffat said earlier this year that he and co-creator Mart Gatiss already have the next two seasons plotted out.
“Rather excitingly, Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,” Moffat said.
“And we plotted out the whole of series four and five. So we have got plans – but our plans don’t tend to be ‘Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world’ they tend to be ‘What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?’ And I think we’ve got some crackers! The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we’ve ever had.”
