HONOLULU—Author and professor emeritus of the University of Hawaii, Beverly Keever, says that she experienced the old China when watching Shen Yun perform at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu on May 4.

“It was very spectacular. It is not something that we can see very often.” said Ms. Keever. Ms. Keever previously worked as a journalist; she was the longest-serving American correspondent covering the Vietnam war.

“The colors, the costumes, the dancing, the backdrop—were all gorgeous,” Ms. Keever said.

New York-based Shen Yun performing Arts was founded in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Ms. Keever says that watching the performance gave her a “feel of old, old China ... and I think today’s China too.”

The performance takes audience members on a journey through China’s rich history, from ancient myths and legends to stories that take place in present day China.

“It’s very spectacular, a must-see,” Ms. Keever said.
