MEXICO CITY—Ernesto Lara Zahir, a Puebla entrepreneur, felt pretty relaxed and at peace after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company present at the Auditorio Nacional, on May 7.

“It’s a spiritual show, sublime, that touches the senses and gives to oneself great peace, harmony,” he said. “It’s a pleasure being here. One leaves very happy, touched by the art, the sublime, the culture, an approach between Mexico and China, that through the senses touches the soul, the heart, and the mind.”

Mr. Zahir is of Mexican and Chinese descent.

Shen Yun, based in New York, has a quest to reawaken China’s divinely-inspired 5,000-year-old cultural heritage—almost destroyed under 60 years of communist rule.

A series of dramatizations adapted from beloved Chinese legends, heroic stories and folk tales are portrayed through classical Chinese dance and traditional folk dance.

Digital state-of-the-art backdrops help the stories unfold, while a full orchestral ensemble playing a unique combination of Eastern and Western instruments supports the dances. A solo pianist accompanies award-winning vocalists rounding out the evening’s entertainment.

Hundreds of handmade costumes add to the kaleidoscope of color on the stage.

“I loved the moment they take out the handkerchiefs,” Mr. Zahir said, referring to one dance he particularly enjoyed. “Because it seems magical, one gets out of here full of peace.”

Dancers’ twirling handkerchiefs evoke the annual change of seasons in this vibrant northeastern folk dance, called An Early Spring. “Light steps and quick turns combine to paint a lively picture with delightful surprises at every beat. As the snow melts away, flowers and fresh shoots unfurl to usher in an early spring,” describes the program book.

Mr. Zahir will tell others to come see Shen Yun perform and feel the “sensitivity, the harmony, the great peace and joy.”
