BRISBANE, Australia—It was a packed house at the Lyric Theatre on Friday evening, Feb. 1, for the first of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ four shows in Brisbane.
Campbell Newman, premier of Queensland, had sent a greeting to the artists, which was featured in the program: “I warmly welcome back to Brisbane and Australia the internationally acclaimed Chinese classical dance company, Shen Yun Performing Arts.”
A Shen Yun performance exhibits the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending the sounds of both East and West, breathtaking backdrops, splendid costumes, vocalists—together creating an experience that’s leaving millions in awe, according to the company’s website website.
One of Friday’s audience members, Bernice Graham, a disability worker, was touched by the presentation. “It’s just beautiful, absolutely beautiful,” she said. “Graceful, colourful … We haven’t been exposed to the Chinese culture.”
New York-based Shen Yun aims to revive the true essence of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization, and bring this experience to audiences around the world.
accompanying Mrs. Graham’s was her daughter, Abigail Graham, a hospital support officer, enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture.
“Especially on our own doorstep, it’s really nice to just experience the culture a little bit more through dance,” Ms. Graham said. “It was so beautiful watching those dancers move across the stage like that—it was incredible. We are really enjoying it.”
The show brings to life not only classical Chinese dance, but also diverse ethnic and folk dances. “Through all the dances of the different provinces and the different dances that they were doing, I think that it’s such an eye opener,” Ms. Graham said.
