FORT WORTH, Texas—Seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts perform to a sold out audience at Bass Performance Hall in Forth Worth on Feb. 20 was an amazing experience for Frank Carroll and his wife.

Mr. Carroll, an attorney, says that he had bought tickets to the performance for his wife as a Christmas present. And while Mr. Carroll normally is not a “big dance aficionado” he said the Shen Yun performance was incredible.

“I find it amazing. The choreography is incredible and the costuming is just beautiful … This is outstanding,” said Mr. Carroll.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts has the mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Founded in 2006 by a group of leading classical Chinese artists, Shen Yun has grown to three dance companies and three orchestra. Each year the performance tours around 20 countries and 100 cities, according to the Shen Yun website.

A unique feature of the Shen Yun performances is the use of state-of-the-art digital projection techniques, which allows the performance to take its audience members on a magical journey through China’s rich history. The digital backdrop projection is synchronized with all other aspects of the performance, such as the dance, music and the stories being performed.

“The most impressive thing to me is the way they have staged the production with the background. Having the performers come out of the background and up on stage, I have never seen anything like that before. It is just amazing,” Mr. Carroll said.

Mr. Carroll was referring to the animation aspect of the projection, which hows figures onscreen that seemingly come to live onstage as live performers.
