VANCOUVER, Canada—Karim Lalani, a dentist, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ Saturday night show in Vancouver. The packed house at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was enthusiastic in it’s response to Shen Yun’s enchanting performance.
“It was good. Very good to open my eyes to Chinese culture,” said Mr. Lalani, who appreciated being exposed to the many aspects of Chinese culture presented by Shen Yun.
“There is a lot of history and culture there, and traditions,” he said, referring to the cultural component of the show. “It is always good to broaden your horizons and see different things.”
New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
“The orchestra was amazing. I mean, the music was flawless,” said Mr. Lalani referring to the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra, a one-of-a-kind musical ensemble that combines the best of the Eastern and Western musical traditions.
The solo vocalists are an impressive component of the show that leaves audiences in awe of their vocal skill. “I think the singers were amazing,” Mr. Lalani said.
As part of China’s 5,000-year history, Shen Yun interweaves tales of modern courage from today’s China into its performances. One piece portrays the courage of Falun Gong practitioners in the face of persecution. This was something that Mr. Lalani appreciated.
“You know, if you can find a way to get your message across and do it through the arts, why not? right? It opened my eyes”
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s Touring Company will play five shows in Vancouver Jan. 10-13, while the New York Company will complete its tour of eastern Canada with five shows in Toronto Jan. 17–20.
