HOUSTON—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company impressed the audience at Jones Hall in Houston on Thursday evening, Dec. 22, with its artistry and message.

Brenda Siebert, an interior designer, said the show was one she'd highly recommend.

She attended the performance with her daughter, Melissa, who trained in various dance styles.

“It was definitely a different style than Western, but I liked it because it was very versatile. It combined all these different forms into one that was very visually stimulating, especially with the graphic design and the colors, it was beautiful,” Miss Siebert said.

The New York-based company uses an animated, digital backdrop that seamlessly allows the dancers to transition from the heavenly scenes on screen to the stage.

“The background with the music and the dancers, I loved the way they made the dancers go back into the [screen], that was really cool, the way they did those graphics, it was very, very well done, very exciting,” Mrs. Siebert agreed.

Mrs. Siebert added that she loved the costumes the dancers wore.

“They were very traditional and true to the dance,” Mrs. Siebert said.

“The colors were on spot,” Miss Siebert agreed. “I thought they were spiritual as well, the show was very spiritual and I thought the costumes really manifested that.”

“It was so cool, how they made the fabric into fans. It was how soft they made it look,” Mrs. Siebert said, referring to Lotus Leaves, a dance where large green lotus leaves are depicted with full fans.

“It worked well,” Miss Siebert said. “It wasn’t that it was just there, they really made it a part of their body.”

She appreciated the spiritual aspect of the show. “They talked about good versus evil, but the sort of coming to self-actualization.”

“I thought it was great. It was still about the divine heavens, no matter who their gods are,” Mrs. Siebert said, adding that the show overall made her feel happy.

Miss Siebert agreed, but said she was saddened by the fact that the traditional values are not supported by the government of present-day China and Shen Yun was not a show that could be seen there.

Shen Yun has three companies touring the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will perform at Houston’s Jones Hall through Tuesday, Dec. 27. For more information visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
