HONOLULU—Phillip Hubbard, a retired physics professor, and his wife, Patricia, were in attendance at Shen Yun Performing Arts at Honolulu’s Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall on Saturday, May 4.

“Oh, it was fantastic,” Mrs. Hubbard said after the performance.

Mrs. Hubbard was especially touched by the talent of Shen Yun’s world-class dancers. “The dancers, the performers, are perfectionists,” she said.

Chinese dance is at the heart of what Shen Yun does,“ reads Shen Yun’s website. ”Known for its incredible flips and spins, and its gentle elegance, it is one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world.”

Unfortunately, today the communist regime in China has nearly destroyed many such art forms—art forms that have for so long been staples of traditional Chinese culture.

“And in its systematic campaigns like the Cultural Revolution, it has uprooted traditional beliefs and destroyed ancient treasures—bringing traditional 5,000 years of civilization to the brink of extinction,” according to the Shen Yun website.

For Mr. Hubbard and his wife, who have visited China and who were seeing Shen Yun for the second time, the havoc wrought upon traditional culture by the communist regime has not gone unnoticed.

“It seems now that you see shows like this a second time—we know a little more. We visited China and we see more of the problems China has with elimination of the traditional cultures and doing everything for money,” Mr. Hubbard explained. “It’s really destroying much of what’s left of their culture.”

Since his last visit to China, Mr. Hubbard said he was most shocked by “the destruction of traditional parts of Beijing.”

Overall, “the performance here was well done—extremely well,” added Mrs. Hubbard.

The couple concluded that they will “definitely” recommend the performance to others, and that next time they hope to bring their grandchildren.
