FORT WORTH, Texas—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed before a sold out audience at the Bass Performance Hall on Feb. 20. Among those attending the performance were Robert and Regina Pursell.

“I think it is terrific, very colorful, and very enjoyable to watch,” said Mr. Pursell, a financial analyst, after watching the performance.

“The glamor, the pageantry, the sophistication of the dance, the easy flowing costumes. It’s extremely entertaining,” he said.

With classical Chinese dance as its hallmark Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by a group of leading classical Chinese artists with the mission to revive the “divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world,” according to the company’s website.

Mrs. Pursell, an aerospace engineer, said the performance reminded her of ballet, but that the performance “has more energy, and more colorful.”

“One of the most comprehensive dance forms in the world, classical Chinese dance incorporates difficult leaps, flips, and spins in its choreography. In addition, classical Chinese dance has a multitude of expressive gestures that convey a wealth of complex emotions,” states the company’s website.

Also Mr. Pursell said that he was impressed by the energy of the performers. “You can tell that they are really enjoying their work. It looks fun to them,” he said.

Shen Yun’s orchestra is unique in that it contains both classical Western and classical Chinese instruments. According to the Shen Yun website “The ensemble at once expresses both the grandeur of a Western orchestra and the distinct sensibilities of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization.”

Mrs. Pursell said that “the music is fabulous,” referring to the full orchestra that accompanies the performance.
