FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts returned to Florida tonight with the first of four performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Au-Rene Theatre, Jan. 11–13.

Gary King, vice president of finance at brokerage firm Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC, and Elaine Faber, a design consultant, attended tonight’s performance.

“The show had beauty to the eye, visual splendor, augmented with digital effects,” Ms. Faber said. Shen Yun’s state-of-the-art digital backdrops create animated settings that extend the stage and synchronize all aspects of the performance.

“It spoke of the amazing dynasties, art, dance, culture, enlightenment, and the provinces that are all different,” she said.

“It also made me sad because the regimes have wiped out the ability to express that beauty and that culture,” she said, speaking of Chinese communist regimes that have all but eradicated China’s traditional culture during more than 60 years of communist rule.

“And it’s not about Chinese take-out food. It’s about the sincerity [and] depth of a culture,” she said.

Mr. King said of her observations: “Very well done!” “I’m impressed!”

“I would say it was certainly an authentic representative of the various eras in Chinese life in dance form,” Mr. King said.

Ms. Faber described the production as “very provocative.”

Shen Yun has three touring companies, each with its own orchestra. The companies tour simultaneously, performing in cities in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia. Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company will perform in Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando (Jan. 15–17) this year.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Shen Yun has been on tour in Florida, with performances in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Saint Petersburg, Jacksonville, Sarasota, and Tampa in previous years.

This year, for the first time, the Florida tour will include Ft. Myers (April 23–24), West Palm Beach (April 29–30), and Melbourne (May 2).
